Is root canal treatment possible in Children and Senior Citizens?

Yes, root canal is possible in children and senior citizens. Root canal is a dental procedure to treat an infected tooth. The treatment entails, removing the infected pulp from the deep layers and crevices of the tooth. The tooth is carefully cleaned and disinfected. Followed by filling and sealing it to prevent further infection.
Here are some reasons why you might need a root canal-

  • Gum-related issues like swelling and inflammation
  • An injury to a tooth or teeth
  • Sensitivity
  • Pain caused by an unknown source
  • Deep cavity
  • Issues from a previous filling
  • Chipped or cracked teeth
  • Affects the mobility of one or more teeth

There is a common notion that root canal is painful. It isn't and it is a process that is done almost every single day by practising dentists. Before the invasive process of root canal begins, the patient is given local anaesthesia. What one experiences is soreness and numbness after the procedure is finished. After a few hours, one can go about their day.

For children and the elderly, it is important to maintain oral hygiene at all times. However, root canals need to be performed with the utmost care when it comes to elder people. It's because of ageing and wear and tear that their teeth become very
sensitive. Some people also suffer from ulcerations, and decay which may prove to be more uncomfortable in such situations.

Here’s what you can do to avoid a root canal—

  • Brushing –To maintain good oral hygiene one must brush twice daily. Do a light rinse and gargle specifically after you’ve had your cup of tea or coffee.
  • Flossing- Flossing helps reduce the build-up of dirt around your tooth whereyour brush can’t reach.
  • Diet- Very important to stay away from sodas, and hard candy and eat sweet items in excessive quantities. The acidic and sugar content will erode the enamel which will make the tooth susceptible to cavities.
  • Mouth Guards- If you play sports, protect your teeth by wearing a mouth guard. Having an injured tooth will ultimately lead to bacteria infesting the tooth which will lead to infection. Also, if you grind your teeth in your sleep, wear a protective mouth guard at night.
  • Regular dental check-ups- Regular visits to get clean-ups done will save youfrom an unwanted root canal sitting.
